Even better for parents, the older the children or teens are the more likely they will be able to make their own do-it-yourself zombie, wizard or vampire costume for Halloween and have creative fun in the process.

Vampires

Vampires have been a popular Halloween costume for many years, but are likely to become even more so. With New Moon, the second film of the Twilight Saga, ready to open on the big screen in Fall 2009 and True Blood and The Vampire Diaries showing on the little screen, vampires are likely to be a scary, trendy Halloween costume for some time.

VampiresTraditional

The traditional Vampire costume can be pulled together using a few items.

  • Find a white shirt, black pants and black shoes to wear.
  • Find or purchase a set of vampire teeth.
  • Add white face makeup to get a more pale complexion.
  • Slick the hair back.
  • Add a black cape.

For a more gruesome look, add some fake blood.

VampiresTwilight, New Moon

Becoming a Twilight or New Moon Vampire like Edward or any of the rest of Cullen clan is likely to be the chosen vampire look for tweens and teens. Creating a vampire costume for Halloween is fairly simple.

  • Pick regular clothes to wear.
  • Find or purchase a set of vampire teeth.
  • Add white to very light face makeup to create a very pale complexion.
  • Add sparkles or body glitter for Edward's look.
  • To really pull off the effect get black or golden contact lenses.

For a True Blood or Vampire Diaries look, add some fake blood.

Wizards

Harry Potter, his friends and foes along with the Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place are keeping wizards as a trendy Halloween costume. Children, tweens and teens have two different wizard styles both with wizards from both genders from which to be inspired.

WizardsHarry Potter

Harry Potter, friends and foes will continue to be trendy child and tween Halloween costumes, especially for those who wear glasses.

  • Wear normal clothes.
  • Find or purchase a Harry Potter wizard-style robe.
  • Make a wizard wand.
  • Wear with embellishments like a Hogwarts scarf, tie and Harry Potter glasses.
  • Find an old style broom.

WizardsWizards of Waverly Place

Putting together a wizard costume based on the Wizards of Waverly Place show is probably one of the easiest wizard costume to create. A child can easily become Alex, Justin or Max Russo.

  • Wear normal clothes for Justin or Max.
  • Wear Alex-inspired, bohemian clothes.
  • Optional - wear a dark "Alex" wig.
  • Carry a red wand.

While there are red wands available for purchase, but making a red wand from a stick, red paint and embellishments is be easily done.

Zombies

Thanks to Michael Jackson and a renewed interest in his "Thriller" video there is also a renewed interest in zombies. This season Wizards of Waverly Place staged a zombie prom, which aired soon after Michael Jackson's untimely death. It is likely that tweens and teens will be staging their own anti-proms and zombie proms for Halloween and other times, so will need zombie costumes. The new movie Zombieland (definitely not for children) is also contributing to a renewed interest in zombies.

ZombieMichael Jackson Thriller Style

There are many different zombie looks that could be created from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. (If children haven't seen the video clip, the video may not be suitable for younger children to watch.) Most of these outfits can be pulled together from vintage stores, Salvation Army or raiding grandparents' or parents' closets. Watch the video for ideas, or use the ones below:

  • Michael Jackson Werewolf – Letterman jacket, jeans
  • Date – 50's style skirt, sweater, 50's style ponytail
  • Date – 80's style crop pants, 80's style top and hair
  • Michael Jackson zombie – red Jacket, red pants, white socks, black shoes
  • Zombies – old torn clothes, suits, dresses, hats, rumpled hair
  • Make up – white or green make up
  • Extras – Skull or skeleton mask, fake blood, fake arms or legs

For the basic zombie, find an old outfit and distress it – tearing it, drawing on it to simulate dirt or blood. Add some fake cobwebs.

Be sure to practice the zombie walk and even the zombie dance.

ZombieGoth

Goth Zombies are all about being dark, black and dreary, in addition to being disheveled.

  • Start with the basic zombie clothes, but in black or dark colors (see above).
  • Add white face make up.
  • Use very dark colors for eyes and nails.
  • Be sure to accent eyes with dark eyeshadow.
  • Apply very dark lipstick.

ZombieBlood and Gore

Bloody and gory zombies are probably not the costume for younger children, but this style is very popular and trendy with tweens and even more so with teens. Ways to make a bloody or gory zombie:

  • Start with the basic zombie clothes (see above).
  • Blood – Adding in blood effect to the clothes or make up.
  • Gore – Finding something that can be used as a dismembered hand, arm, foot or leg. Maybe carrying a fake eye, with a patch.

If current trends continue vampires, wizards and zombies will be popular and trendy do-it-yourself Halloween costumes for several years to come. Not only are these costumes in vogue, but many of the Zombie, Wizard and Vampire costumes make for easy, last minute Halloween attire.
